Lets start off with the basis of what a healthy smoothie generally consists of!
- Fruit Base- This is the essential basis to most smoothies out there. The amount of fruit you want to add really depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to go the healthy weight loss route or the hearty sweet smoothie? To stick with your fat loss or weight loss goals, you should add just one base fruit to your smoothie. There are a multitude of benefits of fruit but they also blind us to the fact that they contain natural sugars which can spike blood sugar and sabotage fat loss efforts.
- Vegetables - These are extremely important to suck in the inner nutrients one needs. Some people despise these "V" letter words and if you are one that has a palette not pleased by their flavor, don't panic! Adding them to your smoothie actually camouflages their flavor while still giving you the nutrients and benefits they contain such as fiber, phytonutrients, and more! As far as which to add, think greens such as spinach, kale, and even avocado.
- Superfoods - If you are wanting to go over the top, pay attention here! Superfoods are health and immune boosters which can promote weight loss, increase energy levels, and fight natural diseases. Some of the more popular ones are chia & hemp seeds, maca, turmeric, collagen, cacao, and goji berries. There are also many more but these can be researched online as well. We would consider options that add fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and most important, antioxidants.
- Liquid Base - Most people would think water is the best option because of obvious reasons, being calorie free of course! There are many other liquids that are better and provide health benefits as well. We recommend trying a few until you get the taste you desire. Some of the more popular ones are coconut milk, soy milk, normal milk, or even greek yogurt. These all work to get a great consistency.
